Creating an Online Magazine for Student Writing

Our Syllabus | Our YahooGroup Site | 2003 EV_Online | Members

Welcome!
Welcome to this YahooGroup. We are happy you have joined us. In the next seven weeks, we hope to get to know you and share lots of ideas about creating an online magazine as a vehicle for publishing student writing.

Who we are
We're the moderators of this group. We'll start by introducing ourselves. Here are our brief introductions and photos.

Sandy Peters

I'm Sandy Peters. I've been teaching ESL for yearsin the U.S., Spain, France, Germany, and Japan. Colorado is home to me now. I'm interested in online publication of student writing and co-publish TOPICS Online Magazine with my husband Thomas.

Julia Karet

I'm Julia Karet. Sandy and I became enthused about e-publishing in Japan where we taught together. Since then, I've settled into teaching ESL full time at Chaffey College in southern CA. My writing students at Chaffey have enthusiastically published their work in Topics, Sandy's e-zine. I'm here to share what I know as a classroom-based teacher-facilitator."

Anne Davis with students
Anne Davis with students at J.H. House Elementary School

My name is Anne Davis. I have taught in an elementary school setting as a second, third, and fourth grade teacher. I have also been a remedial reading teacher, an instructional lead teacher, and an instructional technology specialist. Our ESL students have published on Topics, Sandy's e-zine.

I now work at Georgia State University as an instructional technology coordinator. Currently, I am piloting a project with a group of fourth and fifth graders who are publishing their own web sites featuring their writings on current events.

Now it's your turn! Tell us who you are.
We want to include all of you on these web pages and develop our  'online magazine' community.

Please send a brief bio (maximum 100 words). Include any information you'd like to share, such as:

  • your name (Include both your first name and your family name.) Do you go by another name? What name would you like us to use in our discussions?
  • your affiliation and position, if you want to share this, or your student status
  • your professional interests
  • any other interests you would like to share

If you can, please attach a small photo (It can be a photo of yourself, one of you with your students, one of you busy at work or play...whatever!). If you need help doing this, please let us know.

Please send both your bio and your photo to: esl_topics@yahoo.com

These pages are meant to build a sense of community to help us feel comfortable posting messages to each other, so we look forward to receiving your bios and photos!
