Creating an Online Magazine for Student Writing Welcome | Members | Syllabus | Week 1 | Week 2 | Week 3 Week 5 | Week 6 | Week 7 Week Four: Making a Web page with GeoCities This week, your activities depend on whether or not you already have a web site of your own.  Those of you who have never made a web page will have the opportunity to set up your first web page using GeoCities.  For those of you who already have your own web pages, we also have a short assignment if you care to do it! Assignment for those who already have web sites: We realize that many of you have web sites . It would be wonderful if you would post those for everyone to see. Post a message with the URL and include a brief description of the purpose of your particular site. Activity for those who are new to creating web pages: First, go to Yahoo GeoCities at (http://geocities.yahoo.com/ )and sign in. Yahoo GeoCities is one of a number of sites that will host a website for you free of charge. We'll use it since you already have Yahoo IDs and it's fairly easy to use. Then scroll down to Members Page Directory. Then click on Schools & Education. Do a search on any topic that interests you and spend just a few minutes looking at some other GeoCities websites. The purpose of this activity is to give you a feel for the variety of layouts of GeoCities websites. You have a choice of using Yahoo! Page Wizard or Yahoo! Page Builder. Anne Davis created some very simple web pages to show you how easy it is to create web pages either way. Take a look at them. Pages Constructed with Yahoo! Page Builder Heroes http://geocities.com/annedavis773/Heroes.html Many people find Page Wizard too constrictive because you cannot go in and change things easily. You might want to try it out if this is your first attempt at web pages just to feel a little more secure, but you will probably want to go right on create pages with PageBuilder because it offers you more possibilities to create professional-looking pages. The Yahoo GeoCities site includes instructions, but just in case you need more help, Anne has also prepared a page of basic directions to walk you through the process of creating your own web pages. Page Builder Here are some additional sites to visit to get more help on creating a GeoCities website, here are some additional sites to visit: Using the instructions you choose, please create a basic web page. Put up whatever you like on your page, but you might like to include some text, a photo and a link to another site. If you are a beginner, it's fine to start with something simple. Later, you can expand these pages and try more sophisticated things. Assignment for those who just made a first web page: After you have created a page, post a message and share your feeling about this assignment. Be sure to post your web page URL in the message so we can all take a look at our collective efforts.
