Creating an Online Magazine for Student Writing

The Syllabus: What we will be doing in this session

This syllabus will help you follow our activities. Each week's plan will be introduced as we progress through the session

Week One (January 20 - January 26): Getting Started
This week we will to get to know each other and our YahooGroup site. We will also consider a justification for publishing student work online by taking a look at what's in it for both students and teachers.

Week Two (January 27 - February 2): Examining existing online magazines
We'll explore some existing online magazines that publish student writing to see how they are organized and what kinds of student writing, photos, and artwork they include.

Week Three (February 3 - 9 ): Linking classroom learning and web publishing through project-based learning
We will explore ways web publishing can be integrated with classroom learning goals and look at the role of project-based learning. We will examine classroom projects published in TOPICS Online Magazine and share ideas on how to create projects for our own classrooms.

Week Four (February 10 - 16): Setting up a web page using GeoCities
This is important for those of you who are newcomers to web page creation because you'll learn to make a basic web page. Those of you who already have your own web sites will explore more projects.

Week Five (February 17 - 23): Introduction to basic web site design
We'll look at web pages to explore elements of good web site design and try setting up our own 'mini magazines' to get a feel for the process of creating one.

Week Six (February 24 - March 2): Adding interactivity
This week we will see how basic interactive features provide opportunities for readers to interact with your site and provide feedback to your students

Week Seven (March 3 - 7): Wrapping it up
To wrap up, we will think about permission to publish student writing and ways to promote your sites in order in order to build readership.We'll also invite final comments on the session.
