Week 4: Making a Web page with GeoCities | Our YahooGroup Site

Anne and students

For those of you who have never made a web page, you can make a very basic one to start with by using templates provided at the YahooGeoCities site. If you are more adventurous, try Yahoo's Page Builder. Here are instructions for trying both.

Yahoo! Page Wizard: Step-by-Step Directions

The Yahoo! Page Wizard is an easy way to make a very simple web page. You will be led through directions that are very specific and clear for you to follow. The Wizard is for beginners. If you are a beginner, you want to stick to this simple format for this project. Instructions for getting started in Page Builder follow below:

  1. Begin on your geocities account homepage located at: http://geocities.com/yourYahoo!ID/

  2. At the top of this page on the right side, you will see a link that says Yahoo! Page Wizards. Click on this link.

  3. You will see a sign in button at the top right. Click there and type your Yahoo! ID and password. Click Sign In. (If the sign in button is not there, you are already signed in and will see your geocities account homepage URL.)

  4. You will see eight template designs for your web page. Choose one.

  5. A new window will open up with your Yahoo! Page Wizard.

  6. "Create new page" should already be selected.

  7. Click Next.

  8. Choose a look for your page appears. You will see that the previous design that you picked has a dot in the radio button indicating that it is selected.

  9. Click Next.

  10. As you go through these steps you will notice a Preview First button. At any time after making selections on the page, you can click there to preview how your page will look. Remember to close this open window before proceeding. This Preview First button is consistent throughout the process.

  11. Enter your page title and text.

  12. Click Next.

  13. Pick your picture. Here you have three choices. Use your own image2. Use the template's default image3. Don't use an image.

  14. For now, pick the template's default image or Don't use an image. This will keep the site construction simple. Unless you have experience on the correct use of graphics for the web, this part can bog you down. Later if you wish to use your own image, contact us and we will be glad to give you information on how to do that in an effective way to preserve web page and foster good web design. For now, keep it simple and choose the template's default image or don't use an image.

  15. You can also type a Picture Caption at this point.

  16. Click Next.

  17. Now, you can type a name for your favorite links and enter your favorite links and their respective web addresses. You may make four choices. (Tip - Have these selected and written down so you will not have to go off browsing for links while creating your site.)

  18. Click Next.

  19. Step 4 asks for personal information. Choose a name for your personal information section.

  20. Type in your name and email address. (Only use your name and email address - not students!)

  21. Choose to select or de-select "I'm Online Send Me a Message."
  22. Click Next.

  23. Name Your Page.

  24. Click Next.

  25. You will be given a choice to view the page. Bookmark this URL or write it down for your own reference.

Instructions for using Yahoo! PageBuilder

If you feel comfortable going beyond a step-by-step guide that the Yahoo! Page Wizard provides try Yahoo! Page Builder.

It does not lend itself to a step-by-step help sheet as there are many ways to go depending on what you want on your page. It does include more features than the Page Wizard.

Here is a quick list of some of the items available in Page Builder.

  • The basics include text, pictures, background, background music, buttons, bullets, horizontal lines, vertical lines, and a counter.
  • Page Effects include IE Page Transitions, Text Tail, etc.
  • Instant Information includes Date & Time Stamp, GeoCities Search, etc.
  • Yahooligan Site links
  • Forms & Scripts

Go to: YahooGeoCities at: http://us.geocities.yahoo.com/v/pb.html and click the Launch PageBuilder link. It takes a little time for the program to load.

Then it is a matter of trying it out on your own. Most of it is point & click. You do not need to know the HTML language.

There is a step-by-step tutorial at: http://us.geocities.yahoo.com/v/p/t/a.html

It takes you through a ten step process that will teach you how to add and modify text, pictures, links, and add-ons. It is a very clear step-by-step process.

You might want to try that and then adapt the page to your preferences or just jump right in by launching Page Builder and experiment and learn at your own pace.

Remember: Index.html is the standard file name for your main home page – the page first seen when visiting your URL.
