A Wedding in Hong Kong

A Wedding in Hong Kong by Yuk Ying Jasmine Sze from Hong Kong What is a wedding like in Hong Kong? About one to four years after a couple meets and falls in love, the man usually asks the woman to marry him and they become engaged. They become fiances. They are engaged to be married. Then they prepare for their marriage. They have a wedding party in a church, a famous park, or at a marriage office. They have a best man who helps the groom and a matron of honor (always a married woman) who helps the bride. These are the most important people in the wedding party.

The wedding ceremony is in the morning. The bride wears a long, white wedding gown and a veil, and the groom needs to wear a tuxedo. They exchange vows and wedding rings.

At noon, the bride goes to the groom's house to visit and serve the oldest people--their parents, older sisters or brothers, and some other relatives. These people give a "red pocket" to the bride and groom. Later they go to the bride's house and do the same.

In the evening, they will have a dinner at a hotel. Guests include parents, relatives, and s ome of their old classmates or teachers.

The bride needs to have at least 4 or 5 wedding dresses. They can be whatever color she wants, but she has to have one which is called "quai boi." This kind of dress represents China, so it is very important to wear it. A professional photographer takes phots of them with each of their families and with friends. They play games with each other. After that, they have to walk around to ask the guests if the dinner was good or not.

After the wedding, they usually plan to have a honeymoon for a week to a month. That is how people get married in Hong Kong.
