Toys
of Yesterday and Today
Hyeok
Hwang from Korea
Hyeok
Hwang prefers the toys she played with as a child
to today's toys.
When
I was a little girl, I played with a doll. My
mother made that doll from fabrics. She made a few
different dresses so I could change the doll's
clothes, and sometimes I drew a doll and made paper
dresses.
When
I was playing house, I made food with pebbles,
dirt, and chopped pieces of bricks to make red
pepper. Leave of trees, blades of grasses, and
petals were my cooking ingredients. At that time,
all nature's things could be my toys. All nature's
things gave me creative thinking and many
ideas.
Nowadays,
there are so many different kinds of manmade toys
which are made out of plastics, metals, and nylons.
Some are for safety, convenience, and handiness,
but I think they are made for now with no
creativity and no purity.
