Barbie, The
Perfect Woman
Christine
LePrince from France
Barbie
dolls came from the United States, but now we can
find them all around the world. This beautiful doll
embodies the perfect woman in the U.S.
society.
In
the beginning, Barbie was blond, with white skin, a
nice bust, and long legs. She was so pretty that
American girls loved her immediately. This doll was
completely different from the usual
ones.
Usually
dolls represented babies or young children, and the
girls tried to be like their mothers. But with the
Barbie doll, which is the idealized woman, the
girls accepted Barbie's role and they wanted to
become women. What's more, beautiful
women.
This
new toy appeared in the 60's and spread across the
Atlantic to Europe. It was a hit there, too. This
phenomenon became international, but in some
countries Barbie dolls have to be different.
Barbie's body and particularly her clothes have to
change to please the girls those countries, for
example, Asian ones.
So,
the market is not completely global because Barbie
has to look like the perfect woman of each country.
And we know that what embodies the perfect woman is
very different from one country to another.
This
toy is a very good example of how American culture
has spread the concept of ideal beauty in women all
over the world.
