Carnival at El Callao, Venezuela Sabrina Volante from Venezuela Carnival in Venezuela is celebrated during the month of February, forty days before Good Friday. Carnival has existed in Venezuela since the colonial period. It was celebrated in Caracas. Today, however, it is taken more seriously in the coastal towns and other provinces, especially in El Callao. El Callao was founded in 1853; it was called Caratal. It is a town with multicultural history, where gold and riches were offered. Carnival was brought to this town by a mixture of Englishmen, Americans, Frenchmen, and the slaves that were brought into the country. The Carnival in El Callao is known for its "devils."
