American
fast food has definitely affected Koreans. You can
spot fast food restaurants from America everywhere
and many of the younger generation don't like
traditional Korean food anymore.
Koreans
are now using western spices such as ketchup,
mayonnaise, and butter to cook regular meals. Salad
with western style dressing is also popular
now.
In
addition, manners in restaurants are not the same
as before. Waiters address us in a more westernized
manner. We Koreans don't use individual dishes for
eating something from main dishes. We have always
eaten from one bowl, but now some people think that
it is dirty or unsanitary.
Tipping
is also new for us. In some luxurious restaurants,
we are now supposed to give a tip to the waiter.
Basically, we have never valued service with money,
but now every service is based on money. It's far
from our traditional way of doing
things.
Finally,
new food is being invented. Korean food and
American food are combined into fusion food, such
as a modified pizza to which Korean spices have
been added. These new foods are beginning to appeal
to Korean people.
