Among
non-Chinese, fortune cookies are well-known as a
kind of traditional Chinese food. This is not
exactly true. Even though they seem to be very
popular in America, I have never seen these cookies
in restaurants in Taiwan.
I
think that maybe a long time ago, they were just
like snacks, and you could find them in every
family; but nowadays the restaurants in Taiwan
don't provide them.
When
I came to America, I found that all the Chinese
restaurants had fortune cookies, and it really
surprised me.
Even
though they are not really Chinese, when I get one,
I like to eat it and read the fortune immediately.
I like to read what kind of future I will have.
Besides the fortunes, there are often some Chinese
proverbs written on papers inside the cookies, and
I especially like to read these.
