Social
Action Against Violence
Véronique
Schlumberger from France
Véronique
Schlumberger advocates social action to change
attitudes and stop the escalation of
violence.
Today,
more and more people own guns and are primed to
draw in any case without any remorse. Although they
are a key ingredient in the escalation of violence
all over the world, the prohibition of personal
weapons is not enough to solve the violence
problem. It should only be the first step of a long
process leading to change society.
Two
important social actions can help to modify
attitudes and stop the increase of violence. The
first one is to shorten the work week. This should
increase the number of jobs and, consequently, slow
down unemployment. Another effect of reducing work
time is that parents could spend more time with
their children who now stay alone at home with only
TV as an educator.
The
second solution, related to the first one, is to
develop social education at school and at home by
involving parents in school activities and by
creating after school educational activities in
neighborhoods. In the same way, TV can also create
educational broadcasts.
These
propositions could contribute to improve
relationships between people. People will realize
that we can communicate better with words than with
guns. This can become reality with an effort from
authorities and government who should spend more
money on education and less on the arms
industry.
