We did it! We put on a play in English!

Here's what Susan Hoffius' ESL students at Rice University have to say about the opportunity to collaborate with classmates in a creative enterprise and to perform in English in front of an authentic audience.

IT WAS A GREAT PERFORMANCE! TIME TO CELEBRATE!
The class celebrates at the end of the performance!

Carsten Martschin
Our play was just fun. I played Professor Mendett. I was very suprised that it wasn't so difficult to memorize my lines in a foreign language. Actually, it was kind of easier than in my own language because if you have a new or strange word to memorize, it is much easier out of a funny context you use. Therefore, it is a much better way to learn vocabulary. I really did enjoy it and I hope many more groups after us will have the same opportunity to produce a play.

Naoko Yamaoka from Japan
The play was a serious mystery, but doing it was a lot of fun. We enjoyed sharing the work to prepare the sets and practice our parts. But at the last rehearsal, I realized that I had forgotten the words for my speech. It was a terrible feeling. I thought I might ruin our performance. There were a lot of people in the audience, which made us concentrate on our performance. It was a good feeling after we accomplished a big project together.

Nyun-Haeung Kim from Korea
I played Victoria Pierson. It was really fun! Actually, I thought that it would be just for our class. However, I was really surprised because there were lots of people in the audience. But, I felt comfortable in front of them. I think I should have been an actress! I really like my classmates. They prepared everything for our play. And I really thank Susan. We could never have dreamed of this nice play without her. She helped us with all our scripts. Everybody did a good job!

Luis A. Trastenberg
I really enjoyed the play. It was the first time for me to have a part in a play. I am very proud of my classmates because they worked hard for this play. Our teacher was very helpful, and I think that we had a very nice time during this session. It was an excellent experience! My working group was very responsible, and I think that this session was the most successful one for me since I started attending this school. Thanks to everybody!

Victoria Ochsner
I really enjoying doing the play. It was very interesting work. It brought us even closer together as a group. The time when we were on stage was the best. I played a police officer, and I really thought I was one during the play. Thank you, Susan. Thank you, my classmates.

Rosalia Castro
I enjoyed every bit of the play, "Who is the Gardener." The rehearsal was very funny. I loved everyone being involved, laughing at themselves and feeling confident that they could do it. We did it! And it was a great experience. The play challenged my imagination and encouraged me to be creative. Thank you Susan!

Min-Kee Park from Korea
I had a wonderful experience this time when I did the play with my group. I cannot believe I did it in English. I haven't done a play before, and when I first heard that we would do a play, I wasn't interested in that, but now I regret that I didn't prepare for the play more. If I have a good chance like this again, I want to do it again.

Claudia Londono
That was my very first play in my whole life, and it was in English! It was great. I enjoyed this activity a lot. I have to thank our teacher, Susan, who was a terrific director, and my classmaters who were excellent actors. We had a really nice time.

Jae-Won Hwang from Korea
It was not a perfect play, but it was great. I loved and enjoyed what I did. Thank you to my lovely classmates and Susan, our great teacher for everything.

Claudia Costa
It was a fun way to practice English! We need to do this kind of activity more often.
