My Cats are
Opposites
Aya
Takehisa from Japan
I
got a cat when I was a child on my way home from
kindergarten. That cat was a member of my family
for 23 years. When she died, our family was racked
with grief, so we decided not to have any other
animals.
About
8 months later, I got a phone call abruptly from my
mother when I was in my office. She said to me
I'm bringing a new cat, so you should come
home early! I was surprised because we had
made the promise not to have any pets.
When
I got home, I met a pretty small cat, and I
listened to my mothers excuse that she knew
the cat was an unsold one at a pet shop for about
three months, and all its siblings had been bought.
On
that day, the small cat caught my mother's eye, and
she bought it. We named the cat Momo, which means
peach flower in Japanese.
Momo
is a mild and bashful cat, so sometimes we guess
her character was formed during the time that she
was left alone at the pet shop. Momo seldom came
near people whom she had never met
before.
We
decided to get a friend for Momo, so I adopted a
small cat from my friend. We named the new one
Yuri; it means lily in Japanese. Yuri is a
very active and friendly cat, and she always
follows and sometimes bothers my mother. She loves
to play with us.
When
I play with Momo, Yuri always squeezes in. As a
result, Momo becomes shyer; but she knows she is
older than Yuri, so she licks Yuri on her sunny
spot. They look like good friends at that
moment.
My
family has cats again, and we can feel peaceful and
at ease with them. Momo and Yuri have opposite
characters, but I love them
both.
