Why People Wear Uniforms

Chang-Hong Cheong from Korea

For thousands of years, people have wanted to have a sense of identity apart from others and a strong feeling of belonging to their society. Therefore, people around the world have used things such as flags and uniforms to identify themselves with their societies. Uniforms are one of the most popular ways to do this.

Generally, if students attend schools, schools push them to wear school uniforms. I think they do this for two reasons.

First, students will have to be careful about how they behave when they are wearing uniforms because people can easily identify them and know what school they attend. Second, schools want students to think they belong to the school and are all the same.

Organizations, such as the army or the police, wear special uniforms because they want to stand out from other people.

From my experience, government organizations, such as the army or the police, wear special uniforms because they want to stand out from other people. During their military service, all soldiers and officers must wear uniforms to identify themselves.

In my opinion, this is because an army needs to emphasize standardization. Lots of different kinds of people join an army, so it is necessary to unite all these people in order to carry out military goals.

In other words, if an army accepts very different kinds of peole, it needs to do this in order to maximize their abilities and achieve common goals. Thus, it requires everyone who joins to wear uniforms.
