My Father Took Me to the Opera

In-Pyo Cho from Korea

My father had a strong influence on me during my childhood because he took me to so many places; for example, concerts, art galleries, and museums. I think he wanted to develop my artistic sense so that I would like music, art, literature, and film.

One of my most unforgettable childhood memories is of the time when my father and I went to the opera when I was ten years old. I didn't know anything about the opera and worried that I would be bored, but I didn't need to worry about that.

While we sat in our seats, the orchestra prepared their music—violins, violas, horns—so much sound mixed like a discord because of each person's practice before the performance. However, that sound was enough to immerse me in the music. When the curtain was raised and the lead singer appeared, I couldn't close my eyes and I shivered.

After the opera, my soul was filled with artistic joy, thanks to my father. That time when I went to the opera with him remains one of my best childhood memories.
