I Loved Stray Cats and Dogs

Olga Marek from Russia

When I was a child, I liked walking around the neighborhood. I would leave home and go to the yard which was in front of our house. I used to play with stray cats and dogs. They didn't have owners and were always waiting for me in the street.

I trained them. We played games which could be called "teachers and students", "doctors and paients", "sellers and buyers", "robbers and their leader", and so on.

Then my mother forbade me to play with homeless cats and dogs. She was shocked when I came home with "my friends" following me. She shouted at me, and I swore that it would never happen again. However, she found me once again in my room with my dogs playing a game: "the chorus and the orchestra."

The problem was that I didn't want to do anything but play the piano, play with the animals, and hang around the streets. My Mom was in despair. Then my Dad suggested that they buy me a dog and said that they would walk and play with me after their work. For my part, I had to prepare my homework before they came home.

The situation got better. Later, we moved to another place. Gradually, I forgot my cats and dogs, and I got interested in music.
