The doctor made a mistake during the operation, and my sister fell into a coma.

A Terrible Memory

Karin Romero from Peru

In 1994, my older sister went to the particular doctor because she was feeling a pain in her belly. The doctor said she had appendicitis, and he recommended an operation.

Then in the hospital in Peru, the doctor made a mistake during the operation, and this mistake produced in her "septicemia necrotizante", or blood poisoning. A few days later, she fell into a coma.

The first three weeks, the doctors were telling us that she would die. From that instant, my family and I lived the worst moment of our lives because we have never had this kind of experience.

My sister remained three months in the hospital, and she had five operations during that time. Her lungs, liver and heart suffered complications. My parents and I took care of her every day.

She became like a little girl. She wanted us to be with her all the time. I was very tense and afraid because I felt frightened for her. Also, my parents have heart problems, so I was afraid for their health. During that time all our friends and relatives visited, prayed and encouraged her. They encouraged us, too.

Her illness made me realize how important she is to me, how much I love her and how very important the health of my family is to me.

When I saw my sister in the Intensive Care Unit after her first operation, I thought that she might die; I was remembering all the fights that we had when we were children. At that instant, I felt a sense of guilt, and I wanted to cry. However, I had to control myself to not affect her.

Even after she got better and left the hospital, she was very weak for a long time, and this changed the life of my whole family. Her illness made me realize how important she is to me, how much I love her and how very important the health of my family is to me.

Now I have more faith in God, and I sense that I can resolve any problem. In addition, I learned that in difficult moments we will know who loves us or who doesn't.
