Nobody ever knows what my mom is going to do. There are a lot of funny stories about her. I think she has a special talent that makes us smile and be happy.

My Mom Can Make Us Smile

Yuki Kimata from Japan

My mom is cheerful, funny, and careless. She often makes my family smile. My family includes my dad, my mom, my younger sister, and a dog. Three years ago, when I was watching TV in the living room, a funny thing occurred. My mom was there too. I heard her voice; it sounded like she was calculating the cost of food. I heard numbers like 1.5 + .89 + 7.2 + 4.5.

I looked at her because her voice was loud. What do you think I saw? I saw my mom holding the TV remote controller in her hand. She was calculating by pressing channel buttons on the TV remote controller. She was holding it instead of a calculator by mistake.

Can you believe that? How could she press the "+" button? She didn't notice that she was holding the remote control until I pointed it out to her. Anyway, I laughed a lot. I have to tell you, though, that the remote controll and the calculator were usually together on our table in the dining room.

My family's dog is a brown small male Pomeranian. His name is Jacky. One summer day, he looked sick. We noticed that he had been bitten by a mosquito because he had a swollen leg and was licking it. I was very worried about him because it was possible for him to have filaria (a disease) after being bitten by the mosquito.

What do you think my mom did for him? She picked an ointment—one which we use whenever we get bitten by a mosquito—and applied it to his leg. I was surprised because the ointment is for human beings, not for animals. However, she did't care about that and continued to apply it to his leg for a few days. Fortunately, it worked, and he recovered.

Last winter, my mom told me on the phone that she had revived Jacky. She said,"Last night was very, very cold. I noticed around 2:00 am that Jacky was almost dead because he was frozen like a rock, and he couldn't cry, bark, make sound, or move. I warmed him up in many ways. If I hadn't noticed he was freezing, he would have frozen to death."

Her voice sounded very serious so that I knew it wasn't a joke for her, but I smiled. You must wonder why, but I can easily explain why. Jacky lives inside our house as a family member; he is an indoor dog. In addition, our city have never had weather cold enough to cause someone inside a house to freeze to death.

Nobody ever knows what my mom is going to do.There are a lot of funny stories about her. I think she has a special talent that makes us smile and be happy. When I call my mom on the phone, she talks a lot. She likes to have a chat, and I enjoy talking to her.
