A Knock at the Door

Hue Thi Vu from Vietnam

The first day I arrived in America, a friend warned me about strange people knocking on the door at night. It was on my birthday —Valentine's Day. I was talking on the phone when someone knocked on the door. I looked through the hole in the door, but I didn't see anyone because it was dark outside and light inside. I was scared of strange people and ghosts at that time, so I didn't open the door. I imagined that someone with a gun was at the door, so I didn't open it. Later, I found out it was my new friend who was bringing flowers for my first birthday in the U.S.A.

A Man at the Door

Madlen Hopaian from Bulgaria

In my country, I lived in a big house with two separate levels. I was on the second level. One day when I was sixteen years old, I was at home by myself. While I was studying, somebody rang the bell. When I looked out the peep hole, I saw a man who wanted me to open the door. I was scared, so I went to the balcony and called my grandfather who was working in the garden. He came upstairs and spoke to the person. From that time on, I have always locked my door.

Someone in My Room

Alexander Santana from Brazil

Normally, it is very difficult for me to be alone. I don't know why, but I really am afraid of dark places. I think that it is because of a childhood experience. There was a moment when I was very scared. I was alone in my apartment in Brazil. I was not sure, but I thought that I saw someone in my room. That night was the worst night in my life. I couldn't sleep all night long. It was terrible for me.

A Noise in the Kitchen

María Navarre from Colombia

I will never forget the night when I was alone in my apartment and was trying to sleep. I was a little afraid because that afternoon I had watched a scary movie and I was thinking about it. Thirty minutes later, I heard a noise in the kitchen that scared me a lot, but I decided to see what was happening. I was walking very slowly toward the kitchen when I felt something on my foot. I screamed and ran to turn on the light. Then I saw a little cat that was scared, too, because I had screamed very loudly.

I couldn't get off at the exit.

A Ride on the Highway

Janjie Ma from China

I remember the first time I drove on the highway. It was not long ago. I was driving to the airport, but I couldn't get off at the exit and had to stay on the highway. I was very nervous because it was very scary.
