An Explosion near My School

Camilo A. Ochoa from Colombia

One of the most difficult situations that I was ever in happened in 1990 when a house exploded two blocks behind my school. My peers, my teachers, nobody knew what to do in that situation. I had to evacuate one of my friends because he had cuts on his neck and his arm. Then the principal told me to go to every classroom and tell the teachers that we were going to evacuate the school right then.

A Fire Next to My Shop

Sang Ho Lee from Korea

Several years ago, there was a terrible fire next to my shop. I was the first person to see the fire. I called the emergency number 911 and tried to rescue the people who were in the shop, but I couldn't because the smell of the smoke was too strong for me to enter the shop. I had no choice. I had to wait for the police. After a while, the police came and got the people out of the place. It was bad because some of them were injured and killed.

I was so worried. If our garage didn't open, we would have to stay outside the whole night.

A Remote Control That Wouldn't Work

Taeko Yamamoto from Japan

One night, when my husband and I arrived home, we pushed the button of the remote control to open our garage, but it didn't work immediately. Nothing happened, so we tried steadily and patiently. One minute passed, and I began to worry that we might not be able to enter our home. I told my husband to push the button harder. Three minutes passed. A car approached the garage next door, but the driver didn't get out of his car. He stared at us strangely. I was so worried. If our garage didn't open, we would have to stay outside the whole night. If the other driver called the police, how could we explain our situation? Fortunately, about ten minutes later, we were finally able to open our garage
