Marilena Dal Maso and her brother Giavanno as children in Brazil

I miss all of my childhood time when my dreams and my imagination were linked, when I shared them with my little friends and my brother, when life seemed to be an adventure to play.

Memories of Sao Paulo

Marilena Dal Maso from Italy

Most of my childhood memories are linked with the years I lived in Sao Paulo, in Brazil in Rua dos Campineiros, where I stayed until I was eight. When I remember our house, I can still feel the freshness of our living room when we got back from playing in the road with the children who lived in the same road.

That road was special because there were only a few cars there and we could freely play and run with the other kids. We were of different nationalities; I remember our German neighborhood, the Turkish kids, the Japanese, and also the Italians

Near our house, there was a little shop, whose Brazilian name was "Venda", where we usually bought our candies. I can still remember their sweet smell, their pale pink color and the box of aluminum and glass where the owner kept them.

However, what I miss the most from that time in Brazil is our large courtyard, where my brother and I used to play when at home. When it was very hot, our mamma filled the courtyard with water, transforming it into a kind of swimming pool where we played as if it were a sea. There we shipped out our boats, which were made of used tires, inventing each time different adventures with pirates, tempests, whales and dragons.

I miss all of my childhood time when my dreams and my imagination were linked, when I shared them with my little friends and my brother, when life seemed to be an adventure to play.
