How I Got Hooked on the Lottery

Vanessa Rosenfeld from Germany

A few years ago, when I was traveling in Australia I discovered that I enjoyed scuba diving. I started to attend all the scuba diving courses which were available.

Those courses weren't inexpensive; therefore, one day I had an idea—the lottery. I thought about it, wondering how it worked. Soon after, I went into a shop where they sold lottery tickets and asked the salesperson to explain the system to me.

Shortly after that, I played the lottery for the first time. I was very excited about the lottery numbers that were drawn that night. I didn't win, but from that night on I kept playing every Saturday and Wednesday. I actually never won a single penny, but I was obsessed with it. I think that I was hooked on the lottery because I didn't want to miss my chance to win.

When I went back to Germany, I stopped playing for a while; but eventually I started again. Later, when I moved to London, I experienced a similar situation. I started to play after having quit for a year. However, since I've been in the U.S., I never have been really aware of the lottery even though I sometimes hear something about it on TV or read something about it in the papers. Maybe subconsciously I close my eyes and ears, but I know if I get started again, I will get hooked again because I don't want to miss my chance to win a million dollars.
