Earthquake in Popayan

Beatriz Diaz from Colombia

In 1983, there was an earthquake in my hometown which is called Popayan. It was at 8:30 in the morning during Easter week. There were a lot of tourists there because in my hometown Catholic Easter festivities are very famous.

That earthquake occured when many people were in church. Almost all of the churches collapsed, and many people were killed. Others were trapped when the wall fell in on them.

The streets were destroyed as well as many old houses. Many religious monuments were in ruins because they were in the churches.

At the time of the earthquake, I was at a friend's farm with all my family. We woke up and ran outside. Just after we got out, the farm house collapsed, but fortunately nobody was hurt because we had gotten out.
