Pao-Chien from Taiwan

I was born in Taipei, the capital of Taiwan. There are a lot of tall buildings and big roads in Taipei because of the businesses. For an elementary student, it is not easy to find a place where you can play after school in this city.

When I was a child, my favorite place was Taiwan University, which was next to my apartment. Because there were a lot of trees and grass, I could hear the birds singing at the university when I got up. It is hard to hear the birds sing in Taipei because there are only a few birds which can live in a big city. The songs of those birds always made me feel happy and excited.

At the university, there was also a pond where I usually went to catch tadpoles after school. When I saw the tadpoles the first time, I was curious about their legs because I had never seen anything like that.

Sometimes I would bring some water home from the pond and put it under a microscope. I liked to observe the microorganisms in the water world. When I saw them the first time, I was so excited. I had never imagined that there was another world in the pond.

Five years ago, when I went back to the university, I couldn't find the pond because it had been destroyed. I was sad. After all, I had had a lot of good times there.
