I had never felt so scared in my life. Ivan asked me, "Pablo, what are we going to do?" I said, "I don't know."

Trouble at Paricutin Volcano

Juan P. Mejía from Mexico

At the age of sixteen, I took a very exciting trip with forty of my classmates. This trip to the state of Michoacan was prepared especially for us by our school. When my friends and I arrived by bus to Michoacan, all the beautiful things this Mexican state had to offer surprised us.

The school had rented eight cabins near the Paricutin Volcano. This volcano has a huge history because a long time ago it exploded and killed many people who lived nearby.

The day we arrived, we took trips to other places nearby. We went to Euruapan and other towns. When we were playing in the mountains, my friend Ivan told me, "I don't want to go up the volcano tomorrow." I asked him why he didn't want to go, and he answered that he didn't feel good, and he thought he wouldn't be able to climb the volcano. We had planned to climb the volcano on the last day of our three day trip.

On the third day, we prepared to go up Paricutin. Some friends rented horses, but others and myself decided to walk because we thought that would be better. Before starting our excursion, I convinced Ivan to come with us. After that, he told me that he was scared, but I assured him that everything was going to be okay.

We started the excursion to Paricutin. The teacher told us that we had to follow directions because we could get lost, but we didn't care about what the teacher said. As we were walking toward the volcano, my friends and I decided to take a different route because we were behind the rest of the group.

After a while, we discovered that we were lost. I had never felt so scared in my life. Ivan asked me, "Pablo, what are we going to do?" I said, "I don't know." In addition, to make our situation worse, we didn't have enough food and water.

As we continued to walk, my friend Ivan got his leg bit by a snake. We didn't see the snake. We didn't know what to do. My friends and I carried him for about one or two miles when we found a kind Indian man. We were really happy when we saw him. He took the poison from Ivan's leg with his mouth and saved him. It was unbelievable. We stayed with the kind man, and he took care of us.

After a couple hours of being lost, the others found us, and Ivan started to feel better. We couldn't get to the top of the volcano. That day, I learned that at every moment we have to pay attention to directions and instructions from the people that are in charge. We must always learn from our mistakes and try to be better.
