Keep Away from Drugs

Cesar E. Tapía from Mexico

Four years ago, when I was in my last year in high school, I had a group of friends, but one was special. He was a little different. He was more serious, studious, and the best soccer player at my school. I was his best friend. He always told me about his biggest dream. His dream was to play soccer for the best team in Mexico.

However, I did not know that he started using drugs. When I found out, I tried to keep him out, but he told me, "Do not worry, I can control it." But that was not true. His skills and level in soccer were going down, and he became aggressive with everybody. He started to skip training. I was very worried about him.

One day, seven of us went to a party. There were my friend Luis and I, two of our friends, and three other friends of his. At the party, we were talking, dancing and meeting girls. Around 12:30 am, I was dancing with a girl when I saw Luis and his three friends get up and leave. My other two friends stayed at our table. I followed them thinking that they were going to the bathroom, but I got a bad surprise. They were using drugs.

I got angry with Luis, and we started arguing. Then we decided to go home in a truck. His three friends went into the cab of the truck, and the four of us were in the back. Luis and I were still fighting on the way to our homes.

About halfway, the driver had a seizure and drove off the road through a big, thick wall. My other two friends jumped out of the truck. Luis fell down into the truck. I did not want to leave him there, so I grabbed his jacket and jumped with him in my arms. The truck crashed into the wall with the other three guys in it.

That accident was terrible. Two of the three guys in the cab died, and the third guy was in a coma for a month. Luis got a broken arm and scrapes all over his body. My other two friends and I just got little scrapes. The doctors in the hospital said that the driver had a seizure because of an overdose of drugs.

Luis was thinking a lot after that accident, and he told me, "You are right. Drugs are a false door. Drugs destroy you little by little." He never used drugs after that terrible day, and now he is playing on a semiprofessional team in Mexico. I hope that he will go on to be a professional, and his dream will come true. This bad experience shows me that drugs are bad, so keep away from drugs.

Editor's note:
The real name of Cesar's friend is not used in this story. The friend's real name has been changed to the fictitious name Luis.
