The Mood of Korean Food Stands

Yong-Jun Jo (Ocean) from Korea

I still love the mood of these stands. People feel comfortable there, and it is enjoyable to eat there.

In my country, food stands are very popular, and most people like the food that are sold there. We have many sorts of food stands, and you can find them everywhere.

They're widespread. They are especially popular near middle schools and high schools because students love these foods and they are very cheap and delicious.

Twenty years ago when I was in elementary school, I liked eating foods at these stands after my classes. When I walked home, I would pass many of these food stands and I was always very tempted to eat there. There were so many kinds of food—spicy rice cakes, hot dogs, and O-deang. One of the foods you can buy there looks like a fish made of flour and egg.

Unfortunately, these foods weren't very nutritious, so some parents didn't like their children eating it. Even though they were not very nutritious, I liked to eat there because my friends ate there. The taste of the food was not so important; what was important was that I was eating with my friends.

I still love the mood of these stands. People feel comfortable there, and it is enjoyable to eat there. However, these stands are changing little by little. In the past they were like tiny carts in the street, but now things are changing. There is a tendency to replace the stands with simple mess rooms which are assigned to the corner of a building. Overall, I think these stands will not disappear in our modern life. Whenever I see them, I always want to enter and remember the way they used to be.
