Picture Story Book Stands in China

Jack Qian from China

These stands usually had a lot of different picture story books. Every stand possessed some unique books which were always attractive.

For only two cents, you could rent a picture story book. For unique or more interesting books; however, the rental fee was a little higher.

When I was a teenager in my hometown, there were many picture story book stands. So, what is a picture story book? A picture story book is a book which tells a story by using pictures with some explanations. Usually the pictures were drawn by hand and looked very beautiful.

These stands usually had a lot of different picture story books, and every stand possessed some unique books which were always attractive. For only two cents, you could rent a picture story book.

For unique or more interesting books, however, the rental fee was a little higher; for example, the owner of the stand would ask for five cents to rent a unique book. However, those rare books were the most interesting to me, and thus I had to budget my pocket money carefully to rent as many books as possible.

At the same time, I had to satisfy my curiosity as much as possible. After renting a book, I would find a small bench and sit there to enjoy reading the book. Many kids appreciated the pictures the most, but I preferred reading through the explanations.

Nowadays, these picture story books have been replaced by many Western cartoon books; moreover, people today can afford to buy these cartoon books. However, I miss those picture story book stands.
