Anything Can Happen at a Brazilian Newspaper Stand

Newspaper stands are everywhere in Brazil. They sell many things—magazines, comic books, candy, and crossword puzzle books; and you can see many different kinds of people. They're not like in other countries where you put a coin in the machine and take the paper out. In Brazil, a newspaper stand is a small, public, friendly place where anything can happen.

One day, I went to buy a magazine at a stand near my house and I was talking to the friendly salesman before I bought it. As I bent down to pick up the magazine, another hand touched mine. It was the most charming hand I had ever seen.

When I looked back, my eyes met a pair of wonderful black eyes that I will never forget. The two of us were about to pick up the same magazine. Being very polite, he left the magazine for me and introduced himself. It was the beginning a a beautiful love story.

Well, in fact this never happened to me nor to anyone else I know; but as I said, a newspaper stand in Brazil is a small, public, friendly place where anything can happen!
