New Horizons

María Gutierrez from Mexico

This story involves my family before I got married. It began on August 5, 1985. We lived in Zacapu, Michoacan, Mexico when we decided to move from Zacapu to Tijuana, Baja, California. We did that because my father had a better job in Tijuana.

We were riding in a bus when the driver suddenly fell asleep. The bus slipped, and we were afraid. After that, there was silence. Later, we continued our trip. Three days later, we arrived at the bus station in Tijuana at 7:00 o'clock.

Next, we were waiting for my younger brother Victor to pick us up, but it seemed like he had forgotten that we were arriving in Tijuana. He had been living in Tijuana for three years. We were waiting for a long time, but he didn't come for us. He never appeared because he had had an accident at his job two days before, so he was in a hospital for one week.

Then my father called my aunt to come for us. We were afraid at that moment, and I began to cry because I didn't like Tijuana. It was a new city for me, and I felt lost. My mother told me, "Don't worry baby. This will pass." My other sisters began to cry, too. They felt lost, as well.

Later, my aunt came for us, and we arrived at my aunt's house. My aunt didn't have space for us in her home, but she told us that we could stay there anyway. We lived with her for one year. My aunt and her family were always very friendly.

After that, we moved to another house where we lived for two years. We began to look for jobs. First, my sister Yesenia found a good job. Next, my father began to work. Finally, I found a job in a big steel company on August 10, 1988. After that, I lived in Tijuana for three more years.

This event changed my life. I never got my civil engineer title, but actually this change helped me because now I have an opportunity to study English.
