I felt a little cold as the cold air came through the window. A few minutes later, a man who was the driver's helper came to collect tickets from us. I took my wallet out from my purse and handed it to him.

My Wallet

Manijeh Sharifi from Iran

It was a cold day on October 10, 1989 in Teheran, Iran. I was very tired. I was coming back home from work. I was standing at the bus stop. It was very crowded, and everybody was waiting for the bus.

A half an hour later, the bus arrived. All the men and women started to go toward the bus, but the bus was almost full already, and only few people could get in.

Finally, I got on the bus. When I went inside, I sat by the window. It was about ten miles from my job to my house. I looked out at the street and the people behind the window. I felt a little cold as the cold air came through the window.

A few minutes later, a man who was the driver's helper came to collect tickets from us. I took my wallet out from my purse and handed it to him. After that, I forgot to put my wallet back. When I got to the bus stop across from my house, I asked him to stop. Then I got off the bus.

Later, while I was changing my dress and putting my stuff away, I noticed that I had lost my wallet. I wanted to retrace my steps, but I thought it wasn't very useful.

An hour later, my brother came home. He realized that I was sad and nervous. Then he asked me what happened? Why I was sad? I started to tell him about the event. When I stopped talking, he started laughing at me. I got mad at him because I thought he didn't care about me.

Suddenly, he went out. When he came back, I saw my wallet in his hand. I was really confused. Then he told me that when he reached the bus stop he had found a wallet. He took it to the bus station and gave it to a man who was working in there. He told him, "If somebody asks you about it, you can give it to that person".

I have never forgotten this event for two reasons. First of all I realized what an honest person my brother is. Secondly, I learned that when you find a wallet, you should check the contents to see if it belongs to somebody you know.
