I
Never Give Up
Simon
Mikiewicz from Poland
The
story I am going to tell you about happened two
years ago when I was in high school in Poland. I
came to school on a sunny day, but I felt that
there was something wrong. People from my class
were behaving strangely.
I
noticed that one of my good friends, Tom, was
absent from school that day. After a while, I found
out what happened. Tom had gotten sick, and it was
a very grave illness. He had cancer.
It
was shocking for my friends and me. I couldn't
believe that this had happened to him. He was so
healthy, and he was good in sports. We were on the
same snowboarding team.
Anyway,
he had lung cancer, so he had to undergo an
operation. It was successful. After that, he
returned to school, and he felt very good. Twice a
month he went back to the hospital for medical
examinations, just to make sure that everything was
going well.
One
day when he came to the hospital, the doctors
noticed that the cancer had moved to his brain.
When I heard this information, I felt like, "God,
why do you do this, it is not fair," but I couldn't
do anything but pray.
A
lot of my friends lost their faith and hope, and
they even thought that there was no chance for him
to live, but he was strong. Tom was eager to live,
and he said: "No way. I'm not gonna give up. I will
fight!"
The
doctors made another operation on his brain, and he
also had chemotheraphy. The operation went well,
and now he feels great and everything is fine. From
this experience, I learned that no matter what
happens in our lives, we can't give up and lose our
faith. We have to be strong and keep the faith all
the time.
