An
Accident on Christmas Day
Irene
Buenrostro from Mexico
It
happened nine years ago. My brother was driving
while I was a passenger. We went to the grocery
store to buy Christmas dinner. When we had bought
all that my mom had written on a big list, we
placed all bags in the trunk, but it was too small,
so we used the back seat of my brother's little car
to transport the groceries.
We
were on our way home when we had to stop at a
light. When it turned green, my brother started to
increase his speed. At just that moment, a person
crossed the street in front of our car.
Suddenly,
our car hit the man and pushed him too far, so he
fell down.
My
brother braked and stopped the car. We got out and
rushed to see the man. He looked as if he were
dead. We were very scared. He was drunk, so he had
not seen that the traffic light was red for him.
It
happened in front of a police station, so in just a
minute a police officer arrived. He started to ask
what had happened there. The man was aware he was
guilty and started to say, "I'm sorry, pardon me,
please I'm sorry, I'm drunk". The police listened
to the man, so the police officer knew that my
brother was not guilty in this accident.
My
brother and I were lucky because the man could
explain to the police officer exactly what
happened. Finally, the police officer said to us,
"go home and take care". We still felt very
nervous, and we went home very scared. The accident
taught me to drive much more carefully because in
many cases the pedestrians can cause accidents even
if you are a good
driver.
