Childhood and Independence

Tomokazu Serizawa from Japan

In childhood, I had only a tiny bit of privacy, I didn't have my own room;.
I had to share a room with my two younger brothers. My parents sometimes checked our desks or drawers to keep us away from inappropriate things.

However, when I was fifteen years old, our family moved to another house, and I got my own room. There, my parents seldom came into my room, so I had almost complete privacy.

I think around that age, I was old enough to think for myself and decide by myself what I should do. Of course, it was still necessary that my parents support me economically and mentally, but also I needed the experience of independently doing what I wanted to do. It was important for me to become an adult.

I agree that getting my own place and becoming independent were very important ways to find privacy, but I also suppose that whether privacy is necessary for a child or not is determined by whether or not the child is mature.
