We
Have a Right to Privacy
María
Eugenia from Brazil
Every
day, our privacy is invaded, yet people seem not to
be bothered. The fact is we are getting used to
this intrusion in our private lives and this
worries me. Basically, it is a matter of trust. I
understand that the ones that snoop into your
personal information or that put you on wire tap
just want to make sure that they are dealing with
someone that can be trusted, but this must stop.
Otherwise, we will feel suspicious just talking on
the phone or going to the bathroom.
We
can illustrate this by giving some examples that
were explored by the movie industry. Have you seen
Enemy of the State? It talks about an
extreme situation where people are being watched
even by satellite. This is a scary thing to think
about because if it turns into reality, we had
better watch our steps and do everything right
because "Big Brother" will be watching.
Another
example is the movie The Truman Show where a
man had all his life filmed and broadcast to the
world from his birth to his adult life until he
finally realized that all the people and and even
the city around him were fake; his whole likfe was
a sham. But that was not the worst part. In my
opinion, the work part was that people watched him
on TV for 30 years, and nobody ever felt guilty
about using his life as entertainment. Isn't that
awful?
No
matter how difficult it is, we have to pay
attention and not accept this situation. We have
the right to be free and to do and say whatever is
legal in society that we live in without our lives
being monitored and watched.
