An Unforgettable
Vacation in Japan

Woo Seang Kim
from Korea

Korean students usually study hard to enter a good university and our parents press us to enter a good university. In the third level, each of us becomes a prince or a princess.

We don't need to do anything except study only study. After we pass the entrance examination, we have a feeling of release from jail. But when we enter a university, our life changes completely.

I had been yearning to travel to another country for a long time. When I entered the university, I was finally able to travel, so I started to make travel plans.

I decided to travel in Japan for a month because Japan is the closest country to Korea even though our country's relationsip is the farthest. As you know, Korea was a colony of Japan for 45 years, so our parents have bad memories of this. I wondered what Japan would be like.

I visited almost all the famous and historic cities in Japan for a month. I was able to experience Japan for myself--the life style, food, culture, and customs. The cultures and histories of China, Korea, and Japan are interrelated. China exported their developed culture to ancient Korea, and Japan imported Korean culture.

As a result, both Korea and Japan also use Chinese characters. Even though I traveled to more than 15 cities, I couldn't even find big differences from Korean cities. Our cultures are related very closely.

However, I started to experience typical Japanese culture during the one-month trip. I made many Japanese friends and talked to them. Then, I carefully observed their behavior and I found the typical culture was "order and kindness."

I learned many things during my travels, all of which made me more mature and changed my thoughts about Japan.
