Youth
Meet Pope John Paul II
María
Camila Camacho from Colombia
One
memorable experience that I had was when I went to
a youth meeting with Pope John Paul II, who is the
leader of the Catholic Church, in Paris, France in
1997. I went with a group of young people, most of
whom studied in my college.
First,
we traveled around Spain and Italy where we enjoyed
visiting the main attractions of the cities. When
we got to France, however, everything was
different. Our spirit was full of energy.
Before
going to Paris, we had a retreat for three or four
days in a town where Jesus manifested
himself to St. Mary Margaret Alacoque.
We
heard speeches and had time to be on our own. After
finishing the retreat, we went to Paris by bus,
singing all the way. We made some friends from
Spain and Brazil.
In
Paris, it was incredible. There were over one
million young people. In the streets, everybody was
singing and even dancing. There were people from
all over the world. Every group had their flag.
Before the meeting with the Pope, all the million
young people tried to join hands and circle
Paris.
Then
we went to the stadium to have the meeting with the
Pope. I can't describe my feelings when I saw him.
He is a very charismatic person. The Pope said the
mass which was very special. Everybody was excited,
full of energy and greeting the Pope.
This
year, the meeting will be in Rome. Maybe it will be
even more special because this is a jubilee year. I
wish I could go because the meeting in Paris was
one of the most unforgettable experiences in my
life.
