To
me, it is normal for someone to get nervous
whenever they are facing an uncomfortable social
situation. It's easy to get butterflies in your
stomach if you do not know how to cope with such
situations. I always got nervous when I had to
present my projects during my university
years.
As
a third year student in the School of Architecture
of Silpakorn University, I had to present the
progress of my projects every month.
That
was the first time that I had to stand up and
explain my ideas to a project committee, my friends
and other students in the school, all of whom were
staring at me.
Before
presenting, I prepared and arranged what I had to
explain about the project, yet I always forgot
everything I prepared when I saw everybody in the
conference room looking at me.
While
I was explaining my concepts, my heart raced, my
hands and legs perspired, and I had butterflies in
my stomach. After finishing the explanation, I
could not remember what I had said to the
committee.
After
that happened, I knew that presenting in public
places was a big problem for me, so the next day, I
met my advisor in order to get her advice. She
suggested that I practice speaking to myself in
front of the mirror and pretend that nobody was
staring at me.
I
practiced what my advisor recommended, and in the
second presentation, I did better than I had done
in the first one. After that, my presentations in
public gradually got better and better.
I
am glad that I was able to deal with my big problem
because presentations are very important for
architectural students and architects to explain
their concepts to the project committees and to
clients. If I could not communicate and make others
understand my thoughts, this would become an
obstacle to my studies and work life.
