I am very lucky that my best friend is my beloved twin sister.

My Twin Sister is My Best Friend

Vanessa Rosenfeld from Germany

I was born in Germany, only one hour south of Munich, and only half an hour from the Alps. My dad is English and my mom is German; therefore, I have two nationalities. I have one older brother and one sister who is only twenty minutes older than me. Her name is Victoria, and we are identical twins.

Victoria and I are very much alike and very close. I think that we were communicating before we were able to speak, even before we were born. We developed our own language. Now, of course, we aren't able to use it anymore. It is forgotten. But undoubtedly, when we are together, very often we know what is on each other's mind. We just have to look at each other.

There is a special friendship between twins like me and my sister. We don't have any secrets between us at all.

Victoria and I are very similar; we have the same friends and hobbies. However, I have to admit, that a twin sister isn't always the ideal best friend. In a situation where a different opinion, idea and advice is needed, it is difficult for us to support each other because of our thoughts which are similar.

We went to the same kindergarten, elementary school and high school. However, I repeated the third year of high school whereas my sister went on to the last year. That was the first time in our lives that we were separated.

After we finished our studies, we met in London again to be au pair girls. We lived with different families, but we made sure that we chose families whose houses were not too far apart. We saw each other nearly every day.

Amazingly, it is possible for most twins to come up with the same words or to have the same reaction, and even to have the same answer to one particular question.

Once we were back in Germany, we started the same job as stewardesses. Our boss wanted to be nice to us and put us in the same team. We would not have minded working with different people, but we were happy about being together because we both knew that we could trust each other and work very well together.

One year later, we both went backpacking in Asia and Australia. We also stopped for a couple of days in Singapore, where we got a job offer to work in a German restaurant.

At that time, we still had enough money and continued with our travel plans; but eight months later when we began to run out of money, I decided to take the job in Singapore. Victoria went back to work in Munich.

Seven months later, we had saved enough money to continue traveling. Victoria and I met again in Singapore. We toured through Thailand, Indonesia and ended up in Austrialia. There, I decided to take a diving instructor course. Victoria, however, was not keen to do that, so she went back home.

Since then, we have worked in different jobs and lived in different places, but we are still very, very close. We write e-mails daily and speak to each other once or twice a week. When we see each other, we are very much delighted to spend the time together, and we make sure that everything newall the changes in our livesare thoroughly discussed. I am very lucky that my best friend is my beloved twin sister.
