Remembering My Two Grandmothers

María Eugenia Treu from Brazil

Sometimes, when I smell fresh baked bread in the air, I remember my childhood. My two grandmothers use to help my parents by taking care ofus while they were working.

My Nona (grandmother in Italian) made us small aprons to "help" her in the kitchen. I was 6 and my brother was 4 at that time. I remember that she had this big table in the middle of the kitchen where she prepared the food. She used to cut the pasta in long thin stripes and than let it still to dry. I liked to watch her working and also to eat, even before it was ready. We have a big family and she was glad to make all these delicious kinds of food for everybody. For me her bread was the best.

When it was time to go home and mom arrived to pick us up, the house was a mess, and she tried to complain but Nona always defended us saying: "It is not their fault. This is my house and here they can do whatever they want." Than my mother started to feel guilty saying that Nona would have to much work to do and she answered in a calm way: "If you help me,we will finish quickly". And everybody helped to clean.

In my other grandmother's house was also good but she didn't like messes. She was a former teacher and that's why she always entertained us with stories, chats and drawings. When was the time for a snack, she always prepared all the things that we liked. Then when the doorbell rang and we knew it was my father we hid in her appartment trying to avoid the time to go, but he always found us.

I think these persons were very special and helped me to build my personality, a sense of family and care. People should value more their elderly because they can give you knowlege, love or, at least, good memories.
