Drag
Racing is Unbelievable
A. Hakan

I
didn't know anything about Houston Drag Racing
before I had been there. I had only watched races
on TV. Before going into the stadium, I heard an
incredible sound. It was great. Some of the car
alarms went off in the parking area.
There
were many cars of different styles in the arena,
and some of them were old cars like a 56
Oldsmobile, for example. A 1971 Volkswagen was
another old, classic car that won one of the
races.
It
was crazy. These cars were re-engined cars with
very powerful engines. The cars which we drive on
the streets are much less powerful, so it can
easily be seen that there is a big difference
between the power of cars. It's generally
impossible to drive these cars on the streets
because these are prepared just for these kinds of
races.
Also,
they were in different colours; some of them were
black like Batman's car. For example, there was a
drawing on a car in the fourth race which was like
a thunderbird.
At
the race, I had to wear ear plugs because if you
didn't, you could have ear problems. But I was
happy to be there and touch them. It was
unbelievable. They were alive. There were many,
many cars that raced in the arena. I touched them,
took pictures of them, and talked to the service
officers of the cars. Many of them have been
working more than ten years. They are still living
in the big RVs.
An
announcer gave information about the cars and
drivers at the race. One of of the drivers was an
old woman who was more than 60 years old, and she
won as I remember. Although it seemed dangerous,
all security and emergency services were there and
waited until the end of the race. In addition, many
special trucks were smoothing the base of roads in
the arena every half an hour.
Thus,
I was there, and I felt the power of the machines.
I wish I could be one of the drivers at the
race.
