The
Houston Art Car Parade is one of the biggest art
car parades in the world, and the 1999 parade was
one of the biggest ever. The first art car parade
in Houston was held in 1987. There were just a few
beautifully decorated cars, and most of the owners
were Mexican-American.
The
parade is a big event in Houston. Owners of the
decorated cars try to create a crazy, funny
atmosphere for all the people who come to watch the
the parade. On Saturday, April 17 early in the
morning, they started lining up their cars
downtown.
People
who came to watch also came early to see the cars
before the parade started and to talk to the
artists who created the cars. This year there were
about 250,000 spectators!
The
car owners worked hard to decorate their cars which
were works of art that sometimes didn't even look
like cars anymore.
There
were all kinds of participants in the parade this
year, from one that looked like a dolphin (Dusty
the Dolphin) to one that looked like an airplane to
one covered with 70,000 postage stamps. Some were
pulled by roller blades and some were electric
powered.
I
talked to some of the owners, and they told me they
spent hours and hours on the cars and are always
working to make them better.
