The PHS is Fashionable in Japan

These phones are very popular with high school students because they can use them to communicate with their friends at any time.

The PHS (Personal Handy-phone System) is generally a good communication tool. It is a portable phone system which uses the telephone line for public phones.

It is small and light, so it is easy to carry with you and it is convenient to use. The charge for a call is as cheap as the one with a public phone, but the electric wave is quite weak. So, it becomes useless in a rural area.

Old people, high school students, college students, and business men like them, but they are especially popular with high school students because they can communicate with their friends at any time. Most high school students also think they are very fashionable.

Sometimes, they are a problem. For example, they are noisy when people get calls while they are in class, in a movie theater, at a concert, or on a train or a bus. Also, when people are driving a car and talking on a PHS at the same time, they aren't paying attention to driving and can have an accident.
