High Boots and Shoes are In!

Akiko Nishimura from Japan

Japanese girls like to wear high shoes, boots, or sneakers, especially thick-heeled boots. In Japan, especially in winter, many girls wear these high boots because it's fashionable now to wear them, both with long or short skirts and with pants.

One reason they like to wear these boots is that they want to look taller than they are. If they wear the boots, it looks like they have long legs.

Akiko thinks maybe her fashionable boots might be a passing fad.

Japanese college girls in Japan (1990's) like to wear thick-soled boots.

A second reason is that high shoes or boots look nice when they wear long pants. If they don't wear thick-soled heels with these kinds of pants, the pants are too long.

A third reason that Japanese girls like to wear high shoes or boots is that top models wear them on TV. That influences many of them.

In Japan, almost all young women read fashion magazines. When they see the models in these magazines wearing high shoes or boots, they want to wear them, too.

Maybe wearing high shoes or boots is not really a fashion. Maybe it is just a fad. I mean, it could be that they will be very popular for just a short time, and then girls will not wear them anymore. What do you think?
