This
movie deals with the history of California's
independence when Spain struggled with local people
in order to keep peace. While the rich people
enjoyed having lots of food, horses, houses and
land; the poor people, the majority of population,
suffered hunger and punishments.
When
oppression exists, the people desire to find
somebody who defends them and punishes the
oppressors--in this case, the soldiers and the
Spanish representatives. This character is
represented by Zorro. an outlaw from soldiers'
point of view, a hero from people's view. Zorro
saves innocent people sentenced to death by the
Spanish and fights against injustices.
Zorro
has many of a hero's features: self-reliance,
individualism, can-do spirit, and machoism. He also
has many features of TV heroes; he has another life
as a refined person and a millionaire, making him
more attractive to the audience.
In
the movie, Zorro's identity is discovered by the
governor, who kills his wife, steals his newborn
daughter and imprisons him. Twenty years later, he
escapes from jail and trains a new Zorro, not only
to replace himself, for he is getting too old, but
to let him have his revenge. Of course, the new
Zorro has many of the original's hero's features,
adding some impulsiveness, typical of young people.
He falls in love with his mentor's wife, ending the
movie playing with his little baby suggesting the
continuation of the myth.
